Our Client, a global bank with a long standing presence in Canada is searching for their next Business Lead (Director/Manager Director), Mid-Market & Sponsor Coverage Banking, Diversified Industries located in Toronto.
Job Summary:
Respected Global Bank, with a long-standing presence in Canada, is searching for a leader who will be tasked with launching the Mid-Cap/Mid-Market Banking and Sponsor Coverage strategy for the bank in Canada and will be working closely with the newly established Direct Lending Platform and Mid-Corporate Banking Group in the US to successfully roll out the Canadian business strategy. The ideal candidate will have well established network and deep, trusted relationships within the Canadian Middle Market / Mid Corporate Sponsor universe, developed through 10+ years of successful deal origination and execution experience. Working with dedicated product specialists, this Leader will focus on originating transactions in this segment and offer clients direct access and connectivity to the entire suite of Global Corporate & Investment Banking products and services.
Primary Accountabilities:
Business Development:
- Originating new transactions focusing on deploying the Bank’s capital into opportunities with attractive risk / return profiles, while partnering with a dedicated Capital Markets team to underwrite and place tranches of the transaction into markets further down the capital stack
- The ideal candidate is expected to have deep and trusted existing relationships within the Middle Market / Mid Corporate Sponsor universe operating in Canada, developed through 10+ years of successful deal origination and execution experience within the defined segment focus
Segment Focus:
- Mid-Market and Mid-Corporate companies with EBITDA of $15MM+ that present capital raising needs to support organic growth, M&A, recapitalizations, Change of Control, etc.
- Target client: Public and Private Mid-Corporate issuers and Sponsor and non-Sponsor Mid-Market Private Companies
- IB&M products: Successfully leverage the Bank’s Investment Banking products platform to execute Derivatives (Rates / FX), Securitization / Structured products, Equity Margin Lending, Funds Finance, Working Capital Solutions and Equity co-invests
Transaction Lead:
- This Banker will benefit from a dedicated team of risk professionals, dedicated product partners, engaged junior support talent, in addition to the full support of executive leadership
- As the senior member of the deal team, a high performing Banker will be the most informed advocate with the highest level of conviction behind a transaction, which will enable the Banker to effectively respond to all aspects of the risk and execution phases of the transaction
Relationship Building:
- Effective networking to lead efforts to collaborate with key areas of the bank to effectively market the platform across industry events and conferences, jointly establish proprietary client and prospect focused events, in addition to participating in targeted and effective advertising of the platform
- M&A connectivity to create credible rapport and effective collaboration with the bank’s M&A practice to significantly enhance the Banker’s coverage efforts, particularly in relation to Private Equity Sponsors and Mid-Market Companies of relevance
Effective Leadership:
- As a Senior member of the team, an effective Banker will generate positive, effective engagement across the platform, particularly amongst junior talent, through leading by example and creating positive momentum that will align with the team
- As a leader in the Group, this Senior Banker needs to naturally develop and maintain effective rapport and contact with various members of Executive Leadership, to foster their own personal development, that of their team members and, most importantly, the success of this Group’s business in Canada
- The successful Senior Banker must understand this aspect of the culture and effectively take advantage of it, to succeed
Client Experience:
- Able to offer clients direct access and connectivity to the entire suite of Global Corporate & Investment Banking products and services with dedicated product specialists. Products include: Asset Based Finance (ABL, Securitization) Bank Loans, Private Debt (Direct Lender, 2nd-Lien / Mezzanine, Preferred), Leverage Capital Markets (TLB, HY, Equity-Linked), and a full suite of IB and Markets Products (Rates, FX, Structured Products)
- Focus will be on Canadian diversified set of industries and segments in the Mid-Market and Mid-Corporate segments of both public and private issuers, with an emphasis on calling responsibilities for an assigned set of Mid-Market Private Equity Sponsors operating in Canada
Required Experience:
- A minimum of 10+ years related work experience and an extensive track record of deal origination and fluency in Leveraged Finance, Capital Markets, Investment Banking, and Credit or similar disciplines developed through successful transaction execution with Mid-Market/Mid-Market Corporates and Mid-Market Sponsors operating in Canada
- Demonstrated history of successful business development and relationship management
- Strong foundation in credit
- Proven success in partnering product to effectively cross-sell a broad range of bank products and services based on the clients’ needs
- To have deep and trusted existing relationships within the Mid-Market/Mid-Corporate Sponsor universe operating in Canada
- Track record of successfully structuring tailored capital solutions
- Fluent in Leveraged Finance, Private Credit/Direct Lending, Investment Banking and Markets
- A credible professional with a well-developed network of professional peers and high-impact centres of influence
Technical Skills:
- High level business development capabilities, proven relationship management, and negotiation skills
- Strong credit, analytical, and problem-solving skills
- Superior communication skills – verbal, written, and presentation
- Strong leadership skills; speaking with senior leaders at all levels within bank and with clients
- FINRA License would be an asset
- Relevant industry knowledge, network, and experience in Canada
- Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office
Education & Training:
- Minimum requirement of Bachelor’s degree, with high regard for Master’s degree
- Areas of study in finance, accounting or high-level mathematics are highly regarded
Work Environment:
- Hybrid (3-4 days in office)
